Staying Plugged In (Abiding in The Vine)

The world we live in is busy, noisy, and often chaotic. News cycles move quickly, responsibilities pile up, and distractions are everywhere. In the middle of all that activity, many believers feel spiritually drained without fully understanding why.

The truth is simple: you and I as Believer’s were never designed to live disconnected from God. God created us to live in continual relationship with Him, drawing strength, wisdom, and life from His presence every single day.

A Simple Reminder

The other day I was waiting for my computer to come on. Besides from the fact that it is old, I had not turned it on for a while. But it seemed like it was taking forever. I kept looking at the computer screen wondering what was wrong, only to realize something very simple—the charger wasn’t plugged in. Another time my television wouldn’t respond to the remote control. I pressed the button several times, thinking the TV was the problem. Then the Holy Spirit reminded me that the batteries were not placed correctly in the remote. In both situations, nothing was actually broken. The issue was simply a lack of connection. Once the charger was plugged in, the computer powered up. Once the batteries were placed correctly, the remote worked perfectly with the TV.

The same principle applies to our spiritual lives.

Sometimes believers feel weak, frustrated, or powerless, wondering why things feel so difficult. Often the real problem isn’t that something is wrong with God’s promises. The problem is that we are not fully connected to the source of our spiritual life. God never intended for His people to live beneath what He created them to be. He is a supernatural God, and He has called His children to live a life empowered by His presence and His Spirit. The Christian life is not meant to be lived through human effort alone. Yet many Christians unintentionally limit what God wants to do in their lives because they are not staying connected to Him.

The Bible describes this connection with one powerful word: abiding.

Abiding in the True Vine

In John 15:5, Jesus says:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

Jesus uses the image of a vine and branches to explain our relationship with Him. A branch has no life of its own. Everything it needs flows from the vine. The vine supplies the nutrients, the strength, and the life that allows the branch to grow and produce much fruit. If the branch becomes disconnected, it cannot survive. Jesus makes the truth unmistakably clear: without Him we can do nothing. That does not mean we cannot stay busy or accomplish tasks. It means that nothing of lasting spiritual value can be produced apart from Him.

God the Father, the Vinedresser

Jesus also tells us that God the Father is the vinedresser. A vinedresser is the One who cares for the vineyard. He tends the vine, removes unhealthy branches, and prunes the healthy ones so they can produce even more fruit. In our lives, God wants to do the same thing in us! How?

He works in our hearts.
He corrects our direction.
He removes things that hinder our growth.

Pruning is not punishment. It is preparation for greater fruitfulness. God cares deeply about the condition of our connection with Him.

What It Means to Stay Plugged In?

Staying plugged in to God means living in daily fellowship with Him. It is not about occasional moments of prayer or only seeking God during difficult seasons. Staying connected means making Him part of every area of life.

This connection grows through simple but powerful practices such as:

  • Spending time in God’s Word
  • Talking with Him in prayer
  • Listening for the leading of the Holy Spirit
  • Trusting Him with everyday decisions
  • Walking in obedience to what He shows you

When this becomes part of your daily life, something beautiful happens. The life of God begins to flow through you.

His peace steadies your mind.
His wisdom guides your choices.
His strength carries you through difficult moments. Amen!

When Life Overflows

When a believer stays connected to God, the results are visible. The relationship with God is no longer limited to church services or quiet moments of devotion. His presence begins to influence the way you live every day. It changes how you respond to challenges. It shapes how you treat others and strengthens you during trials that will surely come. In other words, the life of God begins to overflow into every area of life. This kind of life stands out in a world that often feels unstable and uncertain. People today are searching for peace, truth, and hope. Those who remain connected to God carry something the world desperately needs.

Here’s my point: Check Your Connection

Just like a computer cannot function without power and a remote cannot operate without batteries, a believer cannot live the life God intended apart from staying connected to Him.

Jesus said plainly: without Him we can do nothing.

But when we remain connected in prayer, fellowship with Him and other believers, reading His Word, everything changes. His life flows into us, and through us. So, take a moment today and ask yourself a simple question:

Am I staying plugged in to God?

Because when you stay connected to the true vine, your life will not only grow—it will overflow with the life, strength, and peace that only God can and desires to give!
