The Life of the Church Is the Holy Spirit

I recently visited a church and was amazed how many of the members were sick, broken, and bound. It seemed more people were sick than not. These were lovely people who were fighting surmounting challenges in their own strength and not surprisingly, losing the battle. Even though, Jesus Christ has already won the war for every human being!

Jesus said, “It is finished, John 19:30, “When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and [voluntarily] gave up His spirit.” This wording shows that Jesus voluntarily and Sovereignly released His Spirit from His body in submission to God’s plan!

After enduring pain and humiliation on the cross, Jesus carried the sins of all humanity—from Adam to every future person. His sacrifice accomplished everything He intended: to be the Savior of the world. As stated in John 3:17, “God sent His Son not to condemn, but to save through Him.” This was God’s plan!

Jesus promised when He went back to Heaven, He would send another Comforter, the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit has been given a present ministry, but the church doesn’t walk in all God has provided. Sadly, and alarmingly, so many Believers still don’t have a revelation of that. For this reason, many are weak and sick.

The phrase “the life of the church is the Holy Spirit” means the Holy Spirit is the source of the church’s existence, in unity, power, and vitality, giving life to every born-again soul. The Holy Spirit empowers believers, gives spiritual gifts, unites the diverse members into one body in Christ, guides the church, and enables its mission to spread the Gospel.

The Holy Spirit as the Church’s Soul and Memory

Soul: The Holy Spirit is often described as the “Soul of the Church” by analogy to the soul of a body, bringing life, consciousness, and purpose to the collective Christian community.

Memory: He also serves as the Church’s “memory,” reminding believers of Christ’s teachings and guiding them in their faith.

Source of Unity and Diversity

Unity: The Spirit unites believers into one community, fostering fellowship and love among members.

Diversity: While bringing unity, the Spirit also gives individuality and personality to each member, enabling them to fulfill their unique roles and gifts within the body.

Source of Power and Empowerment

Spiritual Gifts: The Holy Spirit grants spiritual gifts, such as prophecy, healing, and speaking in tongues, empowering believers to serve and build up the church.

Service: He empowers Christians to live holy lives, perform good deeds, and carry out the mission of evangelism to the world.

Guidance and Teaching

Guidance: The Holy Spirit guides believers through their spiritual lives, providing strength, comfort, and instruction through various members of the body.

Revelation: He can bring direct revelation through feelings, visions, or other forms, and gives life to Scripture, making it a living word for the church.

In summary, the Holy Spirit is the active, Divine presence that gives the Church its very being, its purpose, and its dynamic life.

This can be likened to latent potential awaiting activation. For example, hot water in a cup remains dormant until it is agitated, at which point it may overflow. Here, the hot water symbolizes the inherent energy, passion, or talent present within an individual or situation, while the act of stirring represents an external influence that initiates transformation.

No life can mean, no faith. No faith produces no actions. Faith without works is dead. Stir yourself up. Allow the Holy Spirit to activate God’s blessings in your life!
